One day a man foundhis spouse so bored. He decided that he wants to make her happy.

The next day he toldher that he had a surprise for her; They're going to a trip, a boat wouldtake them along the Mediterranean and they will stay in each city for 2 days.

When the boat was inthe middle of the sea, a strong storm arrived. Everyone were very scared &they started wearing their life-jackets as the boat was about to sink. Thewoman searched for her husband and she found him in their cabin. He was wearinghis life-jacket, reading a book and eating an apple!!

She was super annoyedand started telling him that the boat is sinking and that he should be worriednot just reading a book like this!

He was very calm anddidn't reply. He stood up & held the knife he was using to cut the appleand grabbed her and put the knife on her neck &

asked her: "Areyou scared?"

She said:"No."

He asked her:"Why? There is a knife around your neck!"

She replied:"But the knife is in the hands of the one I love & trust!"

He said: "Andthe boat is in the hands of the ONE I love & trust" :')

عندي معاد مهم...

احتمال معاد الدوا أو مقابلة مع حد مهم...

أو معاد الsection أو مثلًا interview في مكان نفسي أشتغل فيه

في العادي بنعمل إيه؟

كل لما أهمية المعاد بتزيد كل لما الأهتمام بيكون أعلى

و كل لما حافظت على إني أروح قبل الوقت و أكون جاهزة و محضرة نفسي كويس

مين مش بيعمل كدة؟!

حاسة إنه كلام منطقي و طبيعي :)

I fixed my laptop!

This time it wasn't a software problem. It happened last Tuesday, when it started to fire some spark from its side. I just ignored & continued what I was doing (wasn't the first time, and I kind of knew the reason behind it).
On Wednesday morning, it (Sato: my laptop) decided to object on the fact that I'm totally ignoring it!
And so, it shut down & refused to start!!

Side Note: I'm having exams by the end of this week, and I was gonna start studying when it decided to "object"!!...seems like I shouldn't be studying (a)!

I decided that it was time for me to open it & see what's going on inside...For me, this is really interesting!
I did disassemble a laptop before. It was really old & dad let me do it for the sake of learning. There was nothing for me to ruin, so he was kind of at ease.
I got a large board to work on, some holders & labels to keep everything safe, some screwdrivers and here we go!

1. Removing the base-nails and labeling them with their size

2. Removing the Battery, RAMs, WiFi card & modem card

3. Removing the Keyboard
   -Remove the keyboard nails protector (a plastic bar)
   -Remove the nails
   -Gently remove the keyboard (it's still connected with a cable)
   -Remove the keyboard cable & voila...

4. Removing the upper part (that is shown in the previous step)
This took quite a big time...I thought removing the DVD drive wasn't required, but it was!

It's still fixed from the right-top corner because of the DVD drive.

5. Inside Sato

This is how it looks!
The problem was in the left-top corner, where the cooling system lies.

To remove the cooling-fan we need to:
   -Remove the video cable
   -Remove the fan connector
   -Remove the safety nail

Next would be cleaning the cooling system (fan + fins)

This is how they looked like!
I cleaned them, removed the mess inside caused by the eroded air-filtering sponge & removed some small fractures that I found there.

Finally I assembled it again!
Before fully doing that, I started the laptop, to see if it's gonna work.
First, it did start normally...
Then the screen showed some gray & black lines :-|!
I thought I ruined the screen connector (I had this problem with the old laptop, so I know it might happen)
Again, I disassembled it to make sure that this part was well connected! It was really disappointing!

I know for a fact that I'm just a reason for fixing it...and I should totally depend on Allah.

I prayed Him that it works this time, or else I'll be a BIG destroyer!

I remembered the verse "Is He [not best] who responds to the desperate one when he calls upon Him and removes evil and makes you inheritors of the earth? Is there a deity with Allah? Little do you remember." (Al-Naml 62)

أَمَّن يُجِيبُ الْمُضْطَرَّ إِذَا دَعَاهُ وَيَكْشِفُ السُّوءَ وَيَجْعَلُكُمْ خُلَفَاءَ الْأَرْضِ أَإِلَـٰهٌ مَّعَ اللَّـهِ قَلِيلًا مَّا تَذَكَّرُونَ ﴿النمل: ٦٢﴾

and you know how it works :)

I found a main nail that was about to be broken & managed to secure it.

I carefully made sure that everything is in it's place & started it to find the screen working...Thanks Allah!

So I now announce that Sato is in a good health :)

In this process...I found a treasure on the internet...If you're having a Toshiba laptop

then you'll probably like this: Disassemble, repair and upgrade Toshiba laptop yourself

Things I learned:

Never do this unless you really need to. The parts the nails are fixed to are really delicate & you'll usually break some of them.
Take notes while disassembling...it helps a lot later.
Don't just label the nails with their size, their location is important too.
Count everything, so that you can get it back right.
Stay in an empty room as much as you can...Helps you concentrate & keeps your laptop safe.
Use a screwdriver with lights, it's really handy.
Take care when removing the nails, using a wrong screwdriver may damage the head & this is a problem!
Take photos & videos...It may help you if you forgot something and this memory should be kept!
General Rule: Before starting, one must search for others doing the same thing, it saves time & effort. It also save some parts from getting ruined!

تذكرة بحديث معناه حلو أوي J

أحب الناس إلى الله تعالى أنفعهم للناس ، و أحب الأعمال إلى الله عز وجل سرور يدخله على مسلم ،

أو يكشف عنه كربة ، أو يقضي عنه دينا ، أو تطرد عنه جوعا ،

و لأن أمشي مع أخ في حاجة أحب إلي من أن اعتكف في هذا المسجد ، يعني مسجد المدينة شهرا ،

و من كف غضبه ستر الله عورته ، و من كظم غيظه ، و لو شاء أن يمضيه أمضاه ملأ الله قلبه رجاء يوم القيامة ،

و من مشى مع أخيه في حاجة حتى تتهيأ له أثبت الله قدمه يوم تزول الأقدام ،

[و إن سوء الخلق يفسد العمل ، كما يفسد الخل العسل]

جاء رجل إلى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم . فقال : يا رسول الله ! أرأيت إن جاء رجل يريد أخذ مالي ؟ قال " فلا تعطه مالك " قال : أرأيت إن قاتلني ؟ قال " قاتله " قال : أرأيت إن قتلني ؟ قال " فأنت شهيد " قال : أرأيت إن قتلته ؟ قال " هو في النار " .

خلاصة حكم المحدث: صحيح

أولًا كان في أمر أو توجيه بعدم إعطاء المال للمتعدي

و ده في الغالب مش بيحصل حاليًا

يعني في الغالب لو حد أعتدى علينا بنقوله "خذ اللي عاوزه و أمشي"!!

رؤية للموضوع

لو الحرامي أو البلطجي كل لما يحاول يسرق يلاقي الموضوع سهل و هو بمجرد إرهاب الناس كل اللي عاوز ياخده بياخده

هل هيتشجع أكتر و لا هيخاف؟!

هو موضوع صغير أوي....آية كان ليها أثر على شخص مهم

هو الربيع بن خثيم

كان يخشى الله بشدة

و لقد روي عنه عبد الرحمن بن عدنان أنه

ظل طـــــوال اليل يصلي و يقرأ بآية واحدة

فماذا كانت؟

أَمْ حَسِبَ الَّذِينَ اجْتَرَحُوا السَّيِّئَاتِ أَن نَّجْعَلَهُمْ كَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ سَوَاءً مَّحْيَاهُمْ وَمَمَاتُهُمْ سَاءَ مَا يَحْكُمُونَ ﴿الجاثية: ٢١﴾

و مما روي عنه أن قالت له أمه: "يا بني ألا تنام؟"

فرد عليها: "يــا أمـــاه، كيف يستطيع النوم من جن عليه الليل و هو يخشى البيات؟"
يعني هجوم الخصوم
كأنه يريد أن يقول لها "أنا أنتظر الموت يا أمي، فكيف أطمئن و أنام؟"

فأين نحن؟

قال لأمه عن نفسه: "قتلت نفسي بالذنوب و المعاصي"

و قد قال فيه ابن مسعود: "و الله لو رآك رسول الله لأحبك"

تذكرة

سبعة يظلهم الله في ظله يوم لا ظل إلا ظله..........ورجل ذكر الله خاليا ففاضت عيناه. (متفق عليه)

كسرت الربيع عمة أنس ثنية جارية فطلبوا العفو فأبوا فعرضوا عليهم الأرش فأبوا فأتوا النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم فأمر بالقصاص فقال أنس ابن النضر يا رسول الله تكسر ثنية الربيع والذي بعثك بالحق لا تكسر فقال النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم يا أنس كتاب الله القصاص قال فرضي القوم فعفوا فقال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم إن من عباد الله من لو أقسم على الله لأبره

خلاصة حكم المحدث: صحيح

هي القصة ان فيه واحدة -الربيع- كسرت للخادمة بتاعتها سِنتها

فالمفروض في الحالة دي ان الربيع يتكسر ليها سِنّة برده علشان يبقى عدل

فأهل الربيع حاولوا يطلبوا العفو من الجارية بس هي لم توافق

فعرضوا عليها الفلوس و برده لم توافق

فذهبوا للرسول صلى الله عليه و سلم و عرضوا عليه الأمر

فقال لهم أن العدل القصاص...يعني برده تتكسر سِنّة الربيع

فأنس اللي هو عمته الربيع قال و الله مش هتتكسر سِنّة الربيع

و القوم سعتها (أهل الجارية) وافقوا بالعفو عن الربيع

فالرسول عليه الصلاة و السلام قال: إن من عباد الله من لو أقسم على الله لأبره :)

يعني هو أكنه دعاء أو طلب من ربنا، بس بصيغة القسم

و ربنا أستجاب ليه و لم تكسر سِنّة الربيعة :)

زي مثلًا لو ناس في موقف صعب و واحد يقول بقوة إيمان

و الله سينجينا الله منه J

ممكن يكون من العباد المذكورين دول و فعلًا ربنا يبره و ينجيهم J

اللهمّ أجعلنا من هؤلاء العباد

و سبحان الله شوفو الامتحان اللي بعده هيعمل إيه :)

I Keep My Language Clean

It's an event created by a friend of a friend of mine :)
It started as an initiative of creating a change. Based upon our religion concepts, we should definitely keep our language clean!
Check these sayings by prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him :)

The event has 2 phases now...I'm looking forward for the next ones :)

Phase I: Keeping our language clean while driving

Simply: " Keeping our language clean while driving" because it's a common phenomena that people curse unnecessarily while driving.

Phase II: While joking with friends, I will be KEEN to keep my language CLEAN

"I'm against joking using bad words"...The aim of this phase is to draw attention that cleaning our language doesn't mean only when we are angry. It's a general attitude that we should all seek to acquire, even if it's just a matter of joking.
So, Even if i'm jo...king with my friends, I will be keen to keep my language CLEAN!! :)

And remember!

إِنَّ اللَّهَ لا يُغَيِّرُ مَا بِقَوْمٍ حَتَّى يُغَيِّرُوا مَا بِأَنْفُسِهِمْ

العشر الأوائل من ذي الحجة

غدًا إن شاء الله يبدأ شهر ذي الحجة :)

و هو فضل له مكانة عظيمة؛ فيه العشر الأوائل الذي وصانا بهم الرسول صلى الله عليه و سلم، فيه يوم عرفة، و فيه يحج الناس إلى بيت الله الحرام.

قال تعالى: وَلِلَّـهِ عَلَى النَّاسِ حِجُّ الْبَيْتِ مَنِ اسْتَطَاعَ إِلَيْهِ سَبِيلًا وَمَن كَفَرَ فَإِنَّ اللَّـهَ غَنِيٌّ عَنِ الْعَالَمِينَ ﴿آل عمران: ٩٧﴾

و حتى و إن لم نكن في الحج، فهناك الكثير لنفعله

قال صلى الله عليه و سلم: ما من أيام العمل الصالح فيهن أحب إلى الله من هذه الأيام العشر فقالوا يا رسول الله ولا الجهاد في سبيل الله فقال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ولا الجهاد في سبيل الله إلا رجل خرج بنفسه وماله فلم يرجع من ذلك بشيء

The Little Things

It is the Little Things that Make a Big Difference

There was a man taking a morning walk at the beach. He saw that along with the morning tide came hundreds of starfish and when the tide receded, they were left behind and with the morning sun rays, they would die. The tide was fresh and the starfish were alive. The man took a few steps, picked one and threw it into the water. He did that repeatedly. Right behind him there was another person who couldn't understand what this man was doing. He caught up with him and asked, "What are you doing? There are hundreds of starfish. How many can you help? What difference does it make?" This man did not reply, took two more steps, picked up another one, threw it into the water, and said, "It makes a difference to this one."

What difference are we making? Big or small, it does not matter. If everyone made a small difference, we'd end up with a big difference, wouldn't we?

المشروع باختصار شديد ان احنا نترجم مقالات طبية للغة العربية و لو نجحنا في المهمة هم يتبرعوا لمستشفى سرطان الأطفال 57357 بمبلغ 50 ألف دولار.

العملية بتتم على خطوتين

1. الترجمة للعربي: و ده بمساعدة آداة google عاملينها للمساعدة على الترجمة

2. مراجعة المقالات: و الخطوة دي أن حد فعلًا ترجم مقالة و شخص تاني بيراجعها علشان نتأكد من جودة الترجمة

دلوقتي لسة في مقالات كتير غير مترجمة و في مقالات محتاجة مراجعة

بجد الموضوع مهم أوي و إن شاء الله يكون في ميزان حسنات الجميع

10 Studying Tips

First you have to note that what goes right for someone does not necessary go right for everyone. We're different, so we conceive information differently.
So to start, everyone should define himself for himself...like:

I perform the best when not under pressure.
I need to revise an information twice in order to get it.
I love equations.
I remember stuff when linked together.
etc...

Everyone has his own unique list and remember "We Are Different" :)

Here are some tips that were useful to me and I'll try to generalize them in order to fit with most of us.

First

Start by motivating yourself
Search for a motive to study the subject, like objectives, applications,...why this subject is important for "me"?
Write a list of intentions, why are you studying? link it with your beliefs.
Sometimes you may just need to do something nice before you start, like a good healthy meal, some exercises or may be a computer game :)

Second

Manage your time.
Do not spend the whole day moving between different subjects and having a Zero output at the end of the day!
Do not distract yourself with phone calls while trying to concentrate. (make time for them :))
Group your questions to the end of your study.

Third

Before you start, make sure that there is nothing on your desk that is not related to the subject you're about to start :) If possible, only put the materials that you'll currently use.

It helps a lot to feel that you only have something small to do, also so as not to be distracted with the other subjects.

Fourth

Try to have fun :) Enjoy what you're doing with all possible ways.

use colors, sticky notes, drawings, ...... anything that would make ur studying seems to be fun :)
you can even make a funny chart with all your tasks and deadlines.
For me, mindmaps played a very important role in my study
(check out this document for a quick intro about mindmapping )

Fifth

Take breaks...never stay so long on your desk...It's boring & you'll lose concentration. Take a 5 mins break each 55 mins or something. It depends upon the subject you're studying.

Sixth

Plan your studying time. Make specific studying hours and have some goals to reach.
Make time for having fun, helping your friends, communicating with your family..........
Try to have a balanced life.

Seventh

Collaboration! Sometimes it helps a lot to study in groups. Brainstorm with your friends & share your good ideas. Generally the IQ of a group is much larger than the IQ of an individual.

Eighth

As you study -through the whole year- highlight all the important parts and main topics. It will help you a lot when revising and when trying to find some specific piece of information.

Ninth

Stay organized as much as you can. It will save you plenty of time when it's time to study!

Tenth

Last but not least, never forget night prayers. I can't remember/find the name now, but it was said that one of the good ancestors -who was a chemist- used to pray at night when faced by hard chemistry problems :)

إذا استعصت عليه مسألة، أستعان عليها بقيام الليل

Remember to always follow up with yourself to make sure you're on the right road

You know this famous quote "They laugh cause I'm different and I laugh cause they're all the same" :D?
Well it's a fact that we're different...so why think in a traditional way?
Let your thoughts take you wherever and maybe you'll be that distinguished character who'll actually make a difference.

In 2005, I took a course called "Think Different". It was all about creative thinking and how to be creative.
It began with a simple questionnaire that was supposed to tell you whether you are creative or not.
I don't remember it all, but what stuck in my mind was a question that said: "Do you mix and match with your clothes?"

Well, who don't?! It is quite rare that you meet a girl who wears this specific scarf with this specific shoes and this specific bag and this specific...............you get the point. I believe that even boys don't do this!
The point is, most of the people will definitely answer this question with a "Yes".
and the questionnaire said that if you answered at least 1 question with a yes, then you're creative!
So they started by telling us you're all creative (in a practical way).

From the funny tasks that we took this session was to spend 1 week trying to get off your bed each day in a different way. Like jumping, falling, putting ur hands first on the floor, ........

In 2007, I joined a workshop in ACES that was called mindcodecs, which was also about creativity.
from the most practical and usable things I learned there was the PO.
What PO?
It stands for Provocative Operation. This term was created by Edward De Bono (who also created the 6 thinking hats) [search for it if you wanna learn more, it's interesting ;)]

How I first used this process? well we were teamed up and we needed to find a name for our team. So, we decided to use this operation. I opened a novel that I was holding and got to a random page & we started searching for random words in the page and chose "topaz blu sky" to be our name :)

So as a conclusion...
We're ALL creative.
There are loots of techniques that you can learn to increase your creativity.
Start with yourself and try to exercise being creative.

And a small note...when you are thinking about some important issue and you really need some creative ideas and you can't find any, it doesn't mean that you are not creative!

do not pressure your mind and always remember "The way to get good ideas is to get lots of ideas, and throw the bad ones away." ~Linus Pauling

During this blessed month...I spent 2 weeks in asking ppl & researching about how suitable being a TA at college would be...and after asking 2 Sheikhs...I decided to give it a try and sign the acceptance paper.

I don't know if it is truly the right thing or not...I just took the decision with the reasons I know now...and I'm still in this stage of defining all what's around me...So I'm keeping this prayer that if it was the right thing, May Allah Facilitate it for me..and if it is the wrong thing, May Allah Shows me the right thing & let me go for it.

Telling one of my younger friends about this news...she was just super excited and happy...I know I can't describe how she reacted, but she made me this special picture :)

A Transition Stage

Passing through a transition stage is really irritating. For 18 years now, I've been a student. Now that I'm a graduate, life is different.

I used to live simply without thinking a lot. Life went on. Short goals weren't such a disaster...I wanted to graduate and here I am.

So what's next?

I had this dream of opening my own business, where I'll be producing wonderful, interesting, educative cartoons & games :)

But, is it time? I mean I'm just a fresh graduate, no real experience and not even enough information or enough crazy people!

I guess I need to take some more solo steps before this dream sees the light.

I had this offer of working in college as a TA. I don't know yet if I'll take it. I'm still thinking about it, but till now it's probably a No.

I love the job, so no need to tell me about how awesome it is :) It's just that I've put myself some constraints in the job that I'll choose and I believe they'll be broken in this one.

May be I'll join some company, but given all the facts, it won't be my dream company :D

I'm okay with that, if I'm gonna enjoy the work :)

Yesterday I've been asked if we should recite the Qur'an out loud when praying alone...As a kid I had this piece of information that we shouldn't, so I replied "No, it's only for those who lead the prayer".

For some reason I wanted to double-check the info. and so I went to my sister to ask her. She replied that she didn't read anything about it & she brought a book that described how prophet mohammad PBUH prayed "صفة صلاة النبي". We started reading a little, but we still wasn't 100% sure.

So I started googling the question & found this fatwa.

Should a person who is praying alone recite Qur’aan out loud?

What is the ruling on reciting out loud in prayer for one who is praying alone? Is it permissible to recite silently?

Praise be to Allaah.

Reciting out loud in Fajr prayer and in the first two rak’ahs of Maghrib and ‘Isha’ is Sunnah for both one who is leading the prayers and one who is praying alone. If a person recites silently there is no sin on him, but that means that he is neglecting a Sunnah. If the person who is praying alone thinks that reciting silently helps him to focus more in prayer, then that is o.k., because it was narrated that when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) prayed at night, sometimes he would recite out loud and sometimes he would recite silently, as was reported by ‘Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her). For one who is leading the prayers, the Sunnah is always to recite out loud, following the example of the Prophet (S) and because that enables the congregation to benefit by hearing the words of Allaah, whether the prayer is fard (obligatory) or naafil (supererogatory).

And Allaah is the Source of Strength.

Well, that was supposed to be posted a little bit earlier...

Here we are, SC Part 2 :)

The subjects for the 2nd term were in the alphabetic order:

Computational Geometry
Distributed Computing
Environmental
Theory of Computations
Selected Topic

Computational Geometry was one of the good classes...we learned many algorithms & we brainstormed for solutions together. At the end of the year we made a package that could (test for line intersections, construct convex hull, test for point location & test for star shaped polygons and gets their kernel)

Distributed Computing...In this subject we studied the structure of parallel platforms...the control, communication and networks...The goal was to run an algorithm on more than one machine in parallel.

We studied many algorithms. For every algorithm, we studied how it works in series, in parallel and analyzed it.

It was an interesting subject and I enjoyed it's study...

Environmental...I can not stop remembering Dr.M.Hashim entering our exam and saying: "Any Questions?"...we replied that we're SC so we don't take security (lucky us :D) so he said: "3andoko emta7an bee2a!" (the translation for environmental) :D

So what's about this subject?..It's name is Environmental and Global Change.

Statistical: is the set of mathematical equations that describe the behavior of an object in terms of random variables and their distributions (studied first term in Simulation)

Deterministic: outcomes are precisely determined through the relationships between the states and events in the system without using random variables (we are interested in this)

We studied the ODEs (Ordinary Differential Equations) & the PDEs (Partial Differential Equations)...how to solve them using a number of methods & how to evaluate them.

At the end we made a package that could solve differential equations in a generic way with most of the techniques.

Theory of Computations...This subject has lots of similarities with Automata (studied in our 3rd year). First we decide if a given problem is computable or not...then we study those computable problems...we find the order (P, NP), construct a machine that would represent this problem or write a program (sometimes we're only allowed 4 basic instructions in writing our program)

Selected Topic...This is a course that you get to choose regardless to your department.

I chose to study Java with IBM corporation. I don't know whether it was the best choice or not...As a whole package (system, organizing, syllabus) I wouldn't take it again. At the beginning there was lots of problems about the groups. I lost some of the lectures..then I ended up in a group that hated their instructor! He was changed, but what do you expect from the new instructor who knows she came to substitute the one we didn't like?

Anywayz the time was also not enough for her to give us the whole syllabus...I knew the basics of Java (applications/web) and I tried to get the most benefit out of what was left

This was the 2nd term. I enjoyed being an SCian for this year.

An Endless Stream of Thoughts!

Monday 5th of July was my final seminar...

There are lots of thoughts about it...it ends at Prof. Dr. Saeed Abdel Wahab lecture hall, where we had our discussion.

When I think about it...the stream of thoughts keeps on going!

All the happiness, the laughs, the anger, the sadness, the craziness...everything!

It all keeps on going and I can't have enough.

One of the best moments we had was when my friends spent the night @ our house. We prayed Al-Fajr together...this was unforgettable :)

later, Mona wrote on her status:

Reading it made me sigh :) Thank you Garfield :)

Printing the documentation was also very interesting...we were all very keen to see the output.
We kept on revising the whole thing several times before we print the final version and every time we found major errors...that made us a little bit worried.

Finally we printed a sample and were pleased with it (hoping not to find more errors). We went back home and the next day two of us went to get it and the rest were doing other tasks...

You can't imagine how keen we were to see it :) and what we did when the bell rang :D

Thaanks to Allah it was more than fine :) for us it was just perfect :)

I never thought I’d be writing this post. Actually I still have my doubts :D. I just know now, It wasn’t CSys. I love coding more than this & debugging hardware wasn’t very fun (sorry simoz :D). Definitely not IS :D (no offense :D). May be CS was a choice, but guess what?

I enjoyed my year in SC J with all the ups & downs…I took the whole package & I’d take it once more if I had the choice J

So how did it go?

1^st you need to know that whatever you choose…whether it is CS, IS, CSys or SC…you’ll still be an FCISian & you’ll work wherever you want. The department does NOT define you. It’s you who define your own self. You learn, understand, solve, win, achieve, think or do whatever…not the department!

You can get the BEST of what you have just by keeping your positive attitude.

Those are the subjects for the 1^st term.

Let’s start with Visualization…It’s my favorite J

1^st I need to make a confession…This was one of the main subjects that attracted me to SC. During the 1^st couple of lectures I totally HATED it & I thought it was gonna be the worst subject ever! Then things turned out to be VERY different. Again it became my favorite J

Dr. Ashraf Saad is really different. I was told by a friend from the previous batch that he really loved us (my class) and that he treated us differently. I learned from him how to think outside the triangle I was fitting myself in. He always had some time for free discussion…things related to the subject, but not the exam ;).

When we studied his subject (I’ll tell you later about the “we” J) we always needed to be online. Youtube & Wikipedia were our best friends, along wiz some googling of course.

The exam was way different than all the previous exams…what do you expect? He loved our class :D :D

The subject itself wasn’t complicated; we just needed to read more in order to understand. Most of the study was reflected in real life. I guess that’s why it seemed attractive to me.

Next comes the Simulation. This was common with CS.

The core of the subject was to simulate some real system. Example: Some customers in a supermarket, they come with a certain rate that is governed by a distribution, they are serviced in a certain time & we need to find out whether the system is efficient or not.

It was nice to know that almost any real system can be simulated & studied with computers.

The thing I hated about it was the amount of rules we had to memorize. I generally don't like to memorize rules & I don't study from the beginning of the year, so I don't practice a lot. Totally my fault J.

The third subject was HPC which stands for High Performance Computing. The very special thing about this subject was the exam. It was an open everything exam...yes EVERYTHING :D

Bring all what you can bring (notes, books, summaries, exams wiz solutions, laptops & even USB modems!)

It's one of the exams where you actually use your brain and think :D

Dr.Hossam may sometimes seem to be offensive, but he really wanted our own good. He wanted us to learn right & to get the most benefit out of the subject.

This is one of the subjects that you'll enjoy...and never forget our BEST friend...Google ;)

Next will be the Finite Elements...well I got its goal very late...and this was the main reason why I didn't like it much. We studied the materials and how the bodies are affected by tension, pressure & heat.

It wasn't very much related to our field, but you can always try to find an application that you'd relate to all the year J. After all, we're having a +ve attitude :D, aren't we?

Like simulation we needed to know many rules...so u do the math.

Finally comes the Mathematical...It was one of the nice & light subjects.

Our midterm was a take-home exam & we delivered it via mail. (Interesting, huh :D?)

It's mostly about algorithms & problem solving.

Network Flow, Graph Coloring, Assignment Problem, Queuing System, Scheduling...Along with some old algorithms like Kruskal, Prim...

I totally enjoyed the Visualization, HPC & Mathematical. I liked the Simulation & I went over the Finite Elements.

The "we" I said about earlier was SC gals. We always studied together. We used to divide each subject upon us & met to study together. Sometimes we met offline at college while others were skype conference calls. We enjoyed it a lot & it was surely beneficial.

And this was my first term in SC J

Starting your GP?

This post is about the graduation project in FCIS...How will you start?

The team, the idea, the supervisors & some general tips.

The Team

The whole GP journey begins with choosing your team. This phase is really important.

You need to choose those whom you'll be compatible with.

For a team to be formed, it usually goes through 3 stages:

1. Getting together

2. Struggling

3. Synergy

Maybe we'll talk about these in a separate post later isA.

Next comes the idea & the supervisors

The idea

Research WELL
Don’t just do anything, choose something that u'll be motivated to finish.
Ask around a lot!

Remember: The way to get good ideas is to get lots of ideas, and throw the bad ones away.

The supervisors

Practically these are the TAs

There are 2 types...which to choose will depend upon the team.

If your team has a good leader, both will be fine. If not, go for the first type (leaders) you'll need that.

1-Leaders

Those actually lead the project. They help in everything; reading papers, debugging errors, dividing tasks, motivating the team...

Well known in our college :)

2-Supervisors

They help you technically more than anything else...They support you with information & helps with ideas & solutions for problems

The one thing you really need to learn -if you don't have it already- is to think positively :)

There is nothing that is 100% bad!

Remember: The cup is half full :)

During this -some how- long journey, you'll go through many situations where nothing but +ve thinking would help you out.

Now that you have a team, an idea & a supervisor...you're all set...Begin your 1 year marathon and have lots and lots of fun :)

Some Random Tips

Begin early & do your BEST to stick to your deadlines.
It helps a lot to work on prototypes...i.e.: do the whole job & enhance/update it later.
A time plan may sometimes be ruined...don't give up! things don't always go as expected so give yourself some extra time for the job (just in case things didn't go as planned)
When a certain road seems to lead to nowhere, don't just stick to it...try something different..Think outside the box! Based on personal experience...it may save you months not just days! We lost about 3 months in a task that was done in 2 weeks.
Document your work from the beginning...It helps later...especially when no time is left.
Presenting your work -generally- is really important...learn how to present it in a nice way (either it's the documentation or the presentations you regularly do in seminars). Remember: people don't see except what you allow them to see.
Understand every single step you do (during the whole project)...when you use an algorithm, make sure that you know why you're using it, what are the other options and why not the other options.
Sometimes it helps to imagine the whole thing...I mean the output of the project...how it will look like...How things will communicate...And so on. If you can imagine it, you can achieve it.

Last but not least

Link your work to your beliefs. It's what makes the whole thing worth it.

Remember your intentions & share them with your team...It helps a lot if you all have the same goal.

You probably heard about the raid by Israeli soldiers on a flotilla bringing aid to Palestinians in Gaza. I want to say I was surprised but, I'll be lying. The Jews are cowards, and this is how cowards act.

Allah said in Surat Al-Hashr: "You [believers] are more fearful within their breasts than Allah. That is because they are a people who do not understand. (13) They will not fight you all except within fortified cities or from behind walls. Their violence among themselves is severe. You think they are together, but their hearts are diverse.
